Java Talk and a Sweet Secret

Happy Thursday everyone, almost to the weekend!

What gets you guys going in the morning? A hot shower? Some pump up music? A few jumping jacks?

For me, it's nice warm cup of coffee.  There's nothing better than waking up to that yummy smell.  It truly is the "best part of waking up" for this girl! :)

Coffee has definitely gotten a bad rap in the past, for making people jittery, dehydrated, and addicted.

I did a little research and it seems the consensus is that the health benefits of drinking coffee, in moderation, might actually outweigh the risks.  Did you know that your daily cup, caffeinated or decaffeinated, has more antioxidants in each sip than green or black tea?

So, what exactly is moderation when it comes to drinking coffee?  I'm not positive, but I'd say it's best to limit your consumption to 1 to 2 coffee-based drinks per day, especially if you're someone who is hooked on other beverages with caffeine, like diet coke.  If you find yourself wanting more, you should probably switch to decaf for anything over this limit.

I'm sure I don't even need to tell you all that any add-ins like sugar, syrup, and cream, should be kept to a minimum, because they can definitely negate the healthy benefits and destroy your waistline.

When I'm having a cup of coffee at home, I have it black with some skim milk, or I add a *splash* one of my new favorites, International Delights Coffee House Inspirations Skinny Vanilla Latte Creamer:

You all know that I love a good SKIVIZZLE, and this great new find mimics the flavor, at only 30 calories per tablespoon.  Not too shabby!

When I do get coffee from Sbux, I go for either the the Skinny Vanilla Latte (sugar free syrup, skim milk), a Misto (1/2 cup coffee, 1/2 cup steamed skim milk), or an Americano, with a steamed skim topper.  These are all delicious, healthy options.  If you're a Dunkin Donuts fan, they also have some great coffee (I like the french vanilla or hazelnut), and you can ask for a splash of skim milk.

So here is something fun while we are on the topic of java -- in case you guys didn't already hear, Starbucks is celebrating its 40th anniversary this week.  They're having a special deal starting TODAY, and going on until SATURDAY, from 2PM to 5PM each day.

So the deal is that if you go in during these hours, and purchase ANY beverage, you get a free goodie!! Oh how I love free stuff! The "goodie" is any one of their new line of Starbucks Petities, which are these adorable mini desserts & pastries, all with less than 200 calories!

Pretty good seeing how we all know I have attacked their caloric coffee cake before.  I, personally, am hoping to snag myself one of the Lemon Sweet Squares.

So go get an afternoon pick-me-up and treat yourself to a little something sweet.  You deserve it! :)

By the way, I know I've been plugging Sbux a lot, which is quite ironic considering that I had a pretty terrible experience at one of their stores semi-recently.  Seems I have finally made amends with the caffeine giant.  Their lattes are just too darn good, they sucked me back in!  Plus, who doesn't love themselves some free food, right?!  I know I'm in!

See you guys tomorrow (FRIDAY!),

xoxo

Jess
